Job Description

As a Lead Software Engineer in Engineering Productivity at Google Nest, you will collaborate with multiple teams to solve technical challenges and enable efficient, high-quality code delivery. You'll lead the development of scalable infrastructure across device software, services, and apps, designing and implementing testing components and products. This includes developing tests across all phases of software development (validity, verification, performance, reliability, usability, and stress testing). You will set technical direction, prioritize tasks for a small team, generate innovative solutions, and take full ownership of your work. The role requires expertise in software development (Java/Python), testing, and architecture, with a passion for tools and infrastructure. You will work to improve the engineering process, empowering teams to deliver better products faster.
Must have:
  • 5+ years software development experience (Java or Python)
  • Experience with data structures/algorithms
  • 3+ years software product testing/launch experience
  • 1+ year software design and architecture experience
  • Lead and deliver scalable infrastructure
  • Develop tests for all major software development phases
Good to have:
  • Experience with backend services, integration and hermetic testing
  • Knowledge of software test cycle phases
  • Ability to define software architecture and components
  • Debugging and code fixing expertise
  • Passion for tools and infrastructure

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages: Java or Python, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with backend services, integration and hermetic testing.
  • Knowledge of the major phases and activities of a software test cycle.
  • Ability to define software architecture, components, modules, interfaces, and data for a system to satisfy specified requirements. This includes validating for correctness, functionality, reliability, and other characteristics.
  • Ability to debug, triage, and fix program code or system issues (e.g., firmware, software, application, operational, process).
  • Passion for tools and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Work with multiple teams across organizations to solve technical problems that enable feature teams to ship quality code at high velocity.
  • Lead on scalable infrastructure that spans across device software, services, and apps.
  • Deliver infrastructure to testing components and products based on knowledge of differences and considerations for each test phase (e.g., validity, verification, performance, reliability, usability, stress testing) and develop tests to prove out infrastructure for each of the major phases of software development.
  • Set technical direction and priorities for a small number of adjacent engineers within and across teams.
  • Generate the ideas required to solve technical problems and take full ownership of the solution.
