Summary

The Senior Systems Engineer, Data Services will design, implement, and tune database engineering for the studio's content creation. The position is based in Vancouver, Canada.
Must have:
  • 5+ years DBA and systems engineering experience
  • Document & Relational database experience
  • Database architecture design & implementation
  • Data system troubleshooting & optimization
  • Unix shell scripting & automation
  • Server-side scripting (Python, C/C++, Java)
Good to have:
  • Experience with TimeScaleDB, Redis, InfluxDB, Grafana, Logstash
  • Kubernetes experience
  • AWS Database Managed Services experience
  • Large-scale data management expertise

Job Summary:

At Walt Disney Animation Studios we believe that creativity inspires technology, and technology inspires creativity. The Data Services team is responsible for the design, implementation, and tuning of the database engineering behind the content our studio creates. We are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to join the team in these efforts.

Senior Systems Engineers are expected to drive projects across teams, demonstrate self-direction as well as leadership, and learn through experiencing both success and failure. They must build partnerships with technical and non-technical users, understand their needs, and design relevant, sustainable solutions that align with initiatives for both our Burbank and Vancouver studio locations.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of database administration and systems engineering experience; can include related internships

  • Experience engineering and maintaining Document databases (Cassandra, Elasticsearch / OpenSearch, and/or MongoDB) as well as Relational databases (MySQL, MariaDB, Postgres, and/or MSSQL)

  • Experience designing and implementing architectural designs which ensure long term functionality of databases

  • Expertise troubleshooting and optimizing data systems and pipelines

  • Experience with Unix shell scripting and system automation

  • Experience with at least one server-side scripting language, such as Python, C/C++, or Java

  • Implementation of data ingestion and handling clusters through event streaming platforms, such as Kafka

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience with TimeScaleDB, Redis, InfluxDB, Grafana, and/or Logstash

  • Knowledge of container fundamentals (e.g. Kubernetes)

  • Experience with AWS Database Managed Services

  • Experience with large scale data management, including identifying appropriate on-prem/cloud storage and developing solutions based on data scale and customer use cases

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience


The hiring range for this position in British Columbia, Canada is C$115,000 to C$139,000 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A full range of medical, financial, and/or other variable pay or benefits, may be offered dependent on the level and position offered.
