The Technical Product Manager II at The New York Times will play a key role in developing the Data Platform's product management function. Responsibilities involve collaborating with engineers, data scientists, and analysts to improve data infrastructure, build a data products roadmap, deliver high-quality data products enhancing data-driven decision-making, and establishing product lifecycle processes. This includes partnering across teams to understand and address data needs, prioritizing requests, and delivering iterative products. The role requires using qualitative and quantitative methods to measure impact and a strong commitment to the company's mission of journalistic independence.
Must have:
  • 4+ years experience in data product design and building
  • Experience implementing complex data systems
  • Understanding of data governance, modeling, pipelines, and infrastructure
  • Excellent communication skills for various audiences
Good to have:
  • Software development, engineering, data science, or marketing tech background
  • Hands-on data product development experience
  • Familiarity with SQL, Python, BigQuery, AWS, or Spark

Mission Overview & Responsibilities

The Data Platform Mission aims to empower the organization to access and use data to answer important questions, power user experiences, and to make strategic decisions. 

We are looking for a Technical Product Manager that can help develop the product management function within Data Platform. You will partner with many different teams and roles to develop data products, capabilities, and technologies. This role is based in our New York City office in Times Square.

Responsibilities:

As a Technical Product Manager II, you'll work with teams of engineers, data scientists, and analysts to build a strategy for improving end-to-end data infrastructure to make collecting data, processing it, and using it to make data-driven decisions and experiences as efficient as possible. You will create impact through reusable, extensible, and scalable platform capabilities that can address different use cases. 

You will:

  • Collaborate with data leaders to create a coordinated data products roadmap.
  • Deliver high-quality, easy-to-use data products across many domains that enhance data-driven decision-making.
  • Deliver data products that help data analysts, scientists, product managers, and others to discover and consume information about our content and business.
  • Establish product lifecycle and processes to ensure data product quality.
  • Partner with teams across the organization to understand and address data and analytics needs.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering teams to prioritize requests, communicate progress, and deliver impactful work.
  • Deliver iterative products that provide incremental value and gather quick feedback from partners.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative methods to measure the impact of your work.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the VP of Data Platform Product.

Basic Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience designing and building data products as a product manager or equivalent role.
  • Track record implementing complex data systems applying supporting data analysis, reasoning, and optimization as part of the decision-making process.
  • Experience in data handling approaches and technologies.
  • Understanding of data governance, data modeling, data pipelines, and data infrastructure.
  • Experience communicating complex technical concepts to a variety of audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in software development, engineering, data science, or marketing technologies.
  • Hands-on experience developing data products.
  • Familiarity with data querying languages and technologies (ex: SQL, python, BigQuery, AWS, or Spark).

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$116,000$140,000 USD
