Job Description

The Technical Assistant (TA) at ILM manages all incoming and outgoing media for clients and vendors. Responsibilities include managing digital information through the CG pipeline, acting as a liaison between various teams (Production, CG Supervisors, Artists, Technical Support), loading scans and digital deliveries, managing hi-res image output, file conversion using proprietary tools, ensuring proper file loading (consulting with the Color Science team), communicating issues, tracking work sent to third-party partners, packaging and QCing assets, integrating deliverables into the ILM pipeline, transcoding files, monitoring file transfers, assisting with distribution and processing of work, working with Production Assistants/Coordinators, maintaining security standards, reporting security breaches, communicating with internal and external personnel, documenting procedures, reporting equipment failures, adhering to coding standards, and providing training to colleagues. The role requires strong communication, problem-solving, and time management skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Job Summary:

Position Summary

The Technical Assistant (TA) oversees all incoming and outgoing media to and from clients as well as outsourced vendors. TAs track and manage all digital information through the CG pipeline, and serve as the liaison for digital resources and data pipeline information between Production, CG Supervisors, Artists, and Technical Support Staff.

What You’ll Do

  • Load all incoming scans and digital deliveries from an outside post facility and on-set artists and supervisors

  • Manage the output of all hi-res images for digital delivery to client

  • Use proprietary tools to convert files and apply look up tables

  • Ensure that files are converted and loaded properly by consulting with Color Science team

  • Clearly communicate any issues or problems with deliverables to production

  • Manage, track and review all work sent out to and received by third party partners and shows and communicate any information to appropriate parties as it relates to this process

  • Package up and QC assets as requested by clients

  • Unpack and integrate deliverables back into the ILM pipeline

  • Interact with Show Supervisors, Production Engineering, and CG Artists as needed to ensure smooth flow of data in and out of the studio

  • Transcode file formats and monitor file transfers to and from various sources

  • Assist with distribution, debugging, and processing of work coming back

  • Work closely with Production Assistant/Coordinator in charge of communicating with External Vendors

  • Ensure images or assets are maintained within ILM’s current security standards

  • Notify management of any security breaches or misuse of company or client assets

  • Communicate directly with key production, artistic and support personnel internally

  • Communicate directly with third-party partners when needed. Communication is preferably handled through the shows’ Production.

  • Document and disseminate current operating procedures

  • Timely reporting of equipment or system failures to the engineering staff

  • Work within ILM coding standards and provide proper documentation for any tools created

  • Provide training and assistance to new co-workers on toolsets and workflows

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Film Production or equivalent degree

  • 1-2 years relevant work experience in lieu of education

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively interact with diverse personalities

  • Strong time management skills; Ability to multitask and prioritize

  • Proven ability to work autonomously and in team settings

  • Highly motivated, with a desire for VFX work, dedicated to great customer service

  • Proven problem-solving skills

  • Ability to adapt to a high pressure, fast-paced, dynamic environment

  • Ability to work shift hours as required

  • Keen eye for detail, especially regarding technical quality control

Nice to have:

  • Proven knowledge of, and experience with, Linux, Mac & Windows operating systems

  • Experience with film and video post-production and/or computer graphics techniques

  • Aesthetic eye and/or artistic background

  • Knowledge of networking, tape backup systems, hardware

  • VFX, Feature Animation or Episodic production experience

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, 3D animation software (e.g. Maya, Nuke, Katana)

  • Python scripting experience and/or programming language (e.g. C/C++, Java)
