Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Auckland. But you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

In this team, ou will be instrumental in building the systems that enable valuable capabilities within the Apps SDK that allow App developers to integrate with their external systems including authentication / authorisation, interaction with external servers and upload of assets. You will drive & own projects from solution ideation to design iteration to feature delivery.

You will have the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers and learn what it’s like to create a product for a community of developers. You will have opportunities to speak on behalf of Canva Developers and help nurture and grow our community.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

• Designing, developing and deploying solutions and hands-on software development – working closely with leads, designers, and product managers to deliver features and experiments to our customers worldwide
• Bringing new ideas to the table concerning everything from feature development, process improvement, and product suggestions.
• Developing and iterating on technical proposals – outlining how solutions will be structured and developed.
• Developing solutions you’ve designed from the ground up through to deployment into production.
• Providing on-call support as part of a rotation with the team
• Identifying and addressing performance bottlenecks within the application and broader infrastructure.
• Performance debugging, benchmarking and building great services in general.

You're probably a match if...

• You have commercial experience developing complex web applications
• You have expert knowledge of Java
• You have experience developing APIs with backend web frameworks
• We run on AWS so you would have a working knowledge of the platform
• You have firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns
• You enjoy be leading by example - promoting Canva’s values, no-blame mentality, and inclusive culture.

Optional but any of the following are a huge plus:

• Experience with TypeScript (or other typed languages), React, MobX (or other state management libraries)
• Knowledge or experience aligning with security best practice & activities such as threat modelling
• Experience with implementing authentication/authorisation specifications as a client or identity provider - (OAuth/OIDC a bonus)
• Experience designing easy to use APIs with versioning

With the proliferation of innovations in generative AI and as large organizations have increasingly complex workflows to manage their designs, Canva is well poised to become the platform that simplifies access and discovery of services related to visual design. We are already working with hundreds of developers to enable access to these exciting products with our Apps SDK and Canva public REST API!

As one of the teams in Ecosystem, the Platform, Asset & User Capabilities team grants app developers the ability to integrate with external systems through auth flows, as well as import assets from these services.
