Role Overview:
The Springboard Studio is a design-thinking platform and team within Mass General Brigham (MGB) that engages frontline providers, patients, and staff to make healthcare more user-friendly and to advance systemwide strategic priorities and transformation. Using a process of applied creativity adapted to the time and task constrained healthcare environments found within MGB, Springboard serves as a systemwide design function that works towards implementable solutions that are at the intersection of desirability, feasibility, and viability. Springboard leverages the greatest resource within MGB, its human resources, to put patients at the center and improve the lives of providers. Solutions may be process-related care redesigns, hardware, software, or a combination thereof. The Studio works with entities internal to MGB as well as external companies, educational entities, and individuals to efficiently achieve its mission. Springboard is a continuous learning entity within MGB that adapts its methodologies and measures the impact of both its own processes and the resulting products.
Reporting to the Senior Designer, the Junior Designer serves in three primary functions:
1) facilitate and execute the design thinking methodology Springboard uses to engage stakeholders to identify and solve for challenges, bringing the voice of the customer into product development
2) manage and execute storytelling and communications design in the form of visual collateral and written narratives
3) contributes to project management and deliverables for Springboard’s strategic priorities, as required.
As a member on multiple project teams, the Junior Designer supports achievement of system-wide, cross function, strategic and transformation goals by providing project management, coordination across and between teams and team members, project communications, and logistical support to assigned project teams. This role touches multiple MGB hospitals/organizations across departments and disciplines. The Junior Designer is instrumental in contributing to project outcomes that are aligned with the Springboard Studio’s contribution to the MGB System Strategy.
Position Highlights
- Using human-centered design methodologies and tools, engages end-users to bring the voice of the customer into nuanced challenge statements that inform product development
- Communicates insights from end-users cogently and clearly to stakeholders to be incorporated into product design
- Closely collaborates with Springboard ‘Team Lead’ for each project to deliver high-quality work that meets project timelines
- Contributes to prototype design for physical, digital, and print products based on product requirements identified
- Contributes to and executes on Springboard’s strategic storytelling with a focus on MGB personnel, innovators, their solutions, and Springboard’s work to demonstrate the value and impact of engaging frontline providers and staff in design thinking.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Human-centered Design Product Development:
- Design Research & Prototyping
- Works collaboratively in the design and execution of workshops to lead stakeholders through the design-thinking process
- Execute on design research components of projects—including conducting patient and provider interviews—ensuring the voice of the stakeholders informs product requirements, ideation and solution design
- Identifies potential obstacles and collaborates with team members to diagnose and determine solution(s)
- Contributes to developing solutions, including creating low-fidelity prototypes and visuals (personas, journey maps, etc)
- Acts as a cross-departmental liaison for assigned projects
Storytelling/Visualization:
- Experiments with media forms to address range of strategic storytelling needs (video, infographics, interactive visualizations, animation, illustration, photography, etc as applicable)
- Designs engaging print and digital materials, including design research findings, final reports, marketing/storytelling deliverables, to share progress with clients and support Springboard’s marketing strategy
- Contributes to production and editing of videos and other digital collateral as applicable; liaises with videographers and manage production schedule
- Prints physical materials for events and marketing purposes including posters, stickers, handouts, etc.
Marketing Strategy & Analytics:
- Works with team to brainstorm and develop marketing strategies and storytelling campaigns on an ongoing basis
- Manages social media strategy and deployment of content across key channels, including, LinkedIn, Twitter, internal MGB marketing outlets, and Mailchimp newsletter
- Manages outreach and marketing for upcoming projects and events through post-event follow-up
- Monitors/reviews analytics and readership growth against agreed key performance indicators and provides regular reports on progress

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferred in design (graphic design, product design), studio art, or related field
- 1-5 years related experience required, preferably related to graphic design and/or product development
- Portfolio showcasing sample of design work required
- A combination of education and experience may be substituted for requirements
Skills/Abilities/Competencies:
Skills for Success
- Demonstrated experience with graphic design, UI/UX, and/or UX research methods and processes
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud with proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere
- Preferred familiarity with UI/UX experience with skills in Adobe XD and/or Figma
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products: Word, Powerpoint
- Preferred familiarity with website management (WordPress, Google Analytics), Twitter, and LinkedIn
- Demonstrated achievement in working across teams with diverse functions and areas of expertise
- Familiarity with design-thinking methodology to progress early-stage ideas from ideation to prototype to funding.
- Ability to distill data and translate into compelling stories

- Healthcare delivery experience or public health experience and/or education is a plus.

Working Conditions:
- A hybrid work model, with at least three days on-site and additional as required; professional office setting located in Assembly Row, Somerville, MA. Requires travel locally to other MGB sites.
- Limited US-based or international travel may be required.
