The Commissioning Lead in South Africa will manage the end-to-end delivery of new data center capacity for CO+I (a Microsoft initiative). This role involves working with various teams (architects, engineers, construction managers, etc.) to streamline data center capacity delivery, ensuring projects meet Microsoft's standards. Responsibilities include managing the commissioning process, creating/maintaining best practices, conducting site inspections, driving project commissioning (scope/schedule), reporting progress, and managing vendors. Significant travel within the region and internationally is expected.

Overview

The CO+I Commissioning team is responsible for managing the end-to-end delivery of new data center capacity for CO+I. Through development of leading program management and construction processes, this team is chartered with managing workflow across vertically and horizontally aligned project managers and virtual teams to successfully deliver multi-million dollar, multi-year data center construction programs.

As a Commissioning Manager, you will work with data center architects, engineers, construction managers, network engineers, data center operations teams and finance teams in order to streamline and improve delivery of data center capacity. You will execute against scope, schedule and budget to deliver the latest generation of datacenter technology to Microsoft’s Online Services.

You shall be responsible for ensuring the project is commissioned in accordance with Microsoft's standards and directly manage the process for projects with in EMEA region.

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications: 

Doctorate Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience

OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience

OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience

OR 12+ years relevant technical engineering experience.

Required skills:

  1. Data Center Commissioning
  2. Data Center Operation and Maintenance
  3. Understanding of UPS systems, switchgear, generators and critical mechanical cooling systems
  4. Construction QA/QC
  5. Able to develop and write detailed Commissioning Scripts
  6. Issue identification and resolution management
  7. Degree qualified (B.Eng., BSEE, Associate in Engineering Technology) or equivalent engineering industry experience
  8. Project Management
  9. English Language skills
  10. Proficiency with MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), MS Visio, MS Project , MS Teams

 

Experience required:

  1. Proficient in spoken and written English including technical
  2. At least 3 years Electrical HV, MV and LV distribution and substation experience
  3. At least 3 years’ experience in Data Center facility maintenance, operation, construction and/or commissioning
  4. At least 3 years of construction experience with new build projects
  5. At least 3 years of experience with electrical Test Equipment

 

Additional or preferred qualifications:

Additional or preferred skills:

  1. Commissioning Certification
  2. OSHA 10 or higher qualification
  3. NFPA-70E Certification
  4. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

 

These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Responsibilities

  • Business Processes
    • Reports to the CO+I Regional Commissioning Lead
    • Primary responsibility for Commissioning projects South Africa.  
    • Secondary responsibility for supporting Cx team on other CO+I commission Build and Lease program for EMEA
    • Create and/or maintain best practices to identify and incorporate quality and cost-effective solutions.
    • Manage the contracted Commissioning Agent assigned to Data Center construction projects in region.
    • Development of Commissioning Procedures and Standards.
    • Construction site inspections to review QA/QC and commissioning process.
    • Drive the project Commissioning process including scope and schedule.
    • This role requires regular on-site presence with travel locally within the regions.
    • International travel will form an important part of the role.

 

  • Communications
    • Regularly reviews Construction Progress, QA/QC, Commissioning progress, issues, and KPI metrics to report to management.
    • Coordinate meetings and activities of vendor project managers including integration of lessons-learned.
    • Manage client representatives and partners to define and align on scope, schedule, and budget.
    • Attend scheduled owner/architect/contractor (OAC) and other project meetings, and report as necessary.
    • Report Project Progress on scope, schedule, and budget weekly or as required.
  • Accountability
    • Responsible for developing, managing, and reporting on scope, schedule of the Commissioning Process for CO+I Projects.
    • Manage the Commissioning process for EMEA region projects.
    • Reporting of the Commissioning process to management on a regular basis.
    • Work independently in support of the CO+I Program.
  • Strategy and Development
    • Manage data center commissioning project delivery strategy in alignment with the CO+I road map strategy.
    • Refines practices/policies and develops methods/techniques for driving solutions including development of commissioning procedures.
    • Provides input to long-term delivery strategy and incorporates requirements into the project execution plans.
  • Vendor Management and contract compliance
    • Drive Lease provides to maintain Commissioning compliance to Microsoft standards
    • Provide Vendor oversight and performance management (Scorecard driven).
    • Preparation of RFP's, PER's, and other project approval tools & templates.
