Description
The Senior Lighting Artist will work closely with the Project Art Director to support the project with environment lighting.
The Senior Lighting Artist plays a pivotal role in shaping mood, enhancing clarity, and driving action through their lighting approach. They should possess a strong creative vision and an artistic eye to bring depth and atmosphere to their work. This role requires a balance of artistic creativity and technical expertise, particularly with Unreal Engine 5. Proficiency in both baked and real-time lighting techniques is essential.
Day To Day
Responsibilities
- Create environment lighting for projects, combining artistry with technical expertise.
- Work both independently and within a group on various projects
- Understand what the Project Art Director requires for the project and translate it into the engine by researching, developing, and implementing lighting solutions, with a strong focus on mood and player engagement
- Research current techniques used and utilize most relevant processes
- Strong ability to quickly learn and adapt to project workflows, tools, and requirements.
Skills Knowledge and Expertise
Must Haves
- Understanding of Maya and/or Max
- Unreal experience is required; familiarity with Unity is a plus
- Creates impactful environment lighting, consistently pushing the boundaries of visual quality and innovation
- Ability to create environment lighting using engine tools or plugins
- Ability to create lighting tailored to diverse environmental concepts, whether refining existing concepts or building them entirely from scratch, all with an artistic focus on achieving visually compelling results
- Ability to light a scene to enhance and match the mood and impact in the game
- Ability to create lighting setups that support design with gameplay in mind, collaborating closely with design teams to optimize level flow and ensure it aligns seamlessly with environmental aesthetics and functionality
- Ability to keep an organized and consistent schedule
- Strong communication skills with both internal and external stakeholders, including clients
- Ability to provide accurate time estimates for project planning
- Understanding of bug fixing and investigation
- Ability to help the art team find answers to difficult problems
- Works closely with technical art to develop new or improved upon techniques to improve visual quality
- Work effectively with other depts. as needed
Nice-To-Have Skills
- Ability to do general 3D
- Ability to do a quick first pass of lighting
Education & Experience Required
- Any degree or certification in a relevant field, or equivalent work experience AND,
- At least 5 years of experience in a similar role.
Materials Required
Candidate should provide a portfolio of art that they have created or directed on their resume. Depending on experience, an art test may be required
