Job Description

As a Paint & Roto Artist at Framestore's Melbourne studio, you'll collaborate closely with compositors to integrate CG and live-action elements. Responsibilities include creating mattes for CG hold-outs, removing unwanted items (wires, rigs, markers), and utilizing various techniques for de-graining and re-graining. You'll use 2D/3D tracking, create foreground mattes for animators, reconstruct plates, and utilize Nuke for paint work, including expressions and 3D environment understanding. Accurate bidding, learning Framestore workflows, and basic compositing skills in Nuke are required. The role demands a strong eye for color, understanding of motion blur's effects, and excellent communication skills.

About the role

Paint and Roto Artists work closely with Compositors to help them integrate all elements of an image, including CG and live action, to create film visual effects shots. This includes creating mattes for CG hold-outs as well as using various techniques and software to remove items such as wires, rigs and tracking markers.

This hybrid role is based in our Melbourne studio and is not eligible for visa sponsorship at this time.

What you’ll do:

● Analyse shots for components breakdown with minimal supervision

● Understand feedback given by supervisors

● Create roto mattes for Compositors to use and has a comprehensive understanding of how these mattes will be used

● Demonstrate the ability to use different techniques to remove rigs and tracking markers

● Strong eye for colour and understand grain structure and successfully de-grains scans and re-grains paint work for further use

● Extensive understanding of 2D and 3D tracking and is able to create accurate, steady tracks

● Create foreground mattes for Animators to use within Maya

● Reconstruct plates or part of the plates even if the elements do not exist

● Research appropriate references and respect sequence continuity to ensure cohesive delivery

● Use expressions within Nuke to help aid paint work

● Understanding of the 3D environment within Nuke and is able to use geo data to project clean plates and understand how to use UV projections

● Accurately bid on how long paint and roto shots will take to complete

● Proactively learn and/or develop specific Framestore gizmos and workflows

● Complete basic composites in Nuke and demonstrate keying, grading, re-timing and screen insertion skills

● Demonstrate a willingness to learn new techniques and software and to share this knowledge with other artists in the department

Job requirements

What we’re looking for:

  • Traditional art and design skills including a knowledge of composition and colour

  • Previous use of Nuke

  • Prior experience in a Paint and Roto role

  • Prior knowledge of a Linux based operating system

  • An understanding of motion blur and how it affects mattes and patches

  • Prior use of a roto-scoping package, ideally Silhouette

  • A desire to learn new techniques and teach fellow artists

  • An Arts or Science degree in a moving picture or art related subject

  • Excellent organisational and communication skills

  • Team-working abilities

  • The ability to take criticism and feedback

  • Good problem solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other artists

  • An understanding of the 3D environment within Nuke, being able to use geo data to project clean plates and understanding how to use UV projections

  • Using expressions within Nuke to help aid paint work

You might also have:

  • 3D Maya interface experience

  • An understanding of Python scripting and how to use this to create and edit Framestore gizmos

  • Planar and point tracking software experience

  • A general understanding of the VFX production and comp workflows

  • A knowledge of photography and practical lighting
