Job Description

Google's Network Engineering team seeks a Network Transport Engineer, Deployments. Responsibilities include planning, designing, and executing the deployment of Haul and Metro Optical Systems. This role requires collaboration with remote field teams, creating clear documentation for equipment installation, fiber testing, and circuit activation. The ideal candidate will identify process inefficiencies and propose improvements to shorten deployment times, working cross-functionally with planning, architecture, and operations teams to deliver scalable Layer 1 transport solutions. A minimum of 3 years of experience in DWDM, TCP/IP, or system design operations methodology is needed, along with experience working with field technicians and vendors in a telecommunications setting. Experience with optical transmission systems, routing, wireless networking, or network design is preferred.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Network Engineering or related field
  • 3+ years experience in DWDM or TCP/IP
  • Experience with field operation technicians
  • Plan, design, and execute optical system turn-up
  • Collaborate with remote field teams
  • Identify process gaps and propose solutions
Good to have:
  • Layer 1 optical transmission systems experience
  • Layer 3 routing TCP/IP experience
  • Wireless networking experience
  • Network design or operations experience
  • Field work in data centers and colocation facilities
  • Knowledge of fiber types and testing tools (OSA, BERT, OTDR)
  • Scripting/programming in Python, Apps Script, and SQL

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Network Engineering or Telecom Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3 years of experience in DWDM or TCP/IP or system design operations methodology.
  • Experience working with field operation technicians, engineers, contractors, or vendors in a telecommunications environment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in one or more of the following disciplines: Layer 1 optical transmissions systems, layer 3 routing TCP/IP, wireless networking, network design, or operations.
  • Experience with field based work in data centers, huts and colocation facilities managed by third party vendors.
  • Knowledge of fiber types and their application, physical fiber characteristics, and standard testing tools Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA), Bit Error Rate Test (BERT), Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR).
  • Knowledge of scripting/programming in Python, Apps Script, and SQL.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design and execute the turn up of Haul and Metro Optical Systems.
  • Collaborate with remote field teams across different geographical locations, providing clear and concise documentation (including network diagrams, and test procedures) to ensure successful equipment installation, fiber testing, and circuit turn-up.
  • Identify process gaps and propose solutions to decrease network rollout cycle time.
  • Work cross-functionally with planning, architecture, and operations teams to deliver reliable and scalable Layer 1 transport solutions.
