Job Description

Google's Hamburg Legal team seeks a Legal Trainee (Rechtsreferendar/in) for a 3-4 month fixed-term contract (January-March 2025). This internship offers insights into diverse legal challenges at Google and YouTube, focusing on internet law development. Responsibilities include assisting with project localization, agreement review/drafting, legal research (intellectual property, consumer/media regulations, advertising, data protection), responding to legal requests, supporting court actions, and contributing to internal knowledge databases. The ideal candidate has completed the first state exam (Erstes Staatsexamen), is fluent in English and German, and possesses strong analytical, research, and communication skills. Experience in data protection, copyright, technology, or media law is preferred. This program is designed for students pursuing legal qualifications and returning to studies afterward.

Must have:

Current enrollment in legal training (Referendariat)
Completed first state exam (Erstes Staatsexamen)
Fluent in English and German
Strong legal analysis & research skills
Excellent communication skills

Good to have:

Experience in data protection, copyright, technology, or media law
Experience managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
Interest in technology and IT-related legal issues

Minimum qualifications:

Current enrollment in compulsory legal training (Station im Rahmen des Referendariats).
First legal state exam completion (Erstes Staatsexamen).
Ability to communicate in English and German fluently to support client relationship management in this region.

Preferred qualifications:

Experience in legal analysis and research.
Experience building relationships and communicate with people at all levels.
Experience in data protection, Copyright, technology, or media law.
Experience working on numerous projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
Interest in technology and IT-relevant legal problems and recent developments.
Available to start between January and March 2025 for a 3-4 months fixed-term contract.

About the job

As a Legal Trainee (Rechtsreferendar/in), and part of the Google regional Legal team, you will help to respond to legal challenges in the information age. You will get an insight into a variety of legal challenges at Google and YouTube, learning to expect the unexpected while actively promoting the development of internet law in an unconventional environment. The legal department of Google (Google Rechtsabteilung Hamburg) offers an optional training period as part of your compulsory legal training (Wahlstation/Anwaltsstation während des Referendariats).

In this role, you will enhance your organizational skills, attention to detail, versatility and composure, while also getting the opportunity to demonstrate that you have sound legal judgment, can learn quickly in a fast-paced environment, and can communicate confidently at all levels.

This program is intended for students currently pursuing legal qualifications, who are returning to studies after the completion of the program.

Please note this job posting is only for traineeship starting January/February/March 2025 for 3-4 months fixed-term contract.

Responsibilities

Assist in a variety of projects such as the localization of Google Products and the review and drafting of agreements.
Conduct research on a variety of legal topics including intellectual property, consumer regulations, media regulations, advertising, data protection, etc.
Respond to various legal requests from users and third-parties in relation to Google services.
Assist the Legal team in the preparation and the management of court actions.
Participate in the creation and maintenance of internal knowledge databases for the Legal team.
