Freejam seeks a Lead Artist to spearhead the art style for Robocraft 2, from in-game assets to marketing materials. Responsibilities include managing and mentoring a team of artists, developing art processes, optimizing content for performance, and ensuring adherence to deadlines. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in AAA game development, hard-surface modeling, texturing, environment art creation, Unity HDRP, shader development (Unity Shader Graph), and managing distributed teams. Proficiency in Maya, Photoshop, Substance, Illustrator, XD, and Speedtree is essential. The role demands strong organizational skills, a collaborative spirit, and a passion for game development.

Description

Freejam (https://freejamgames.com/), developers of the online multiplayer game Robocraft (http://robocraftgame.com), is now looking for a Lead Artist to join our growing team to build the long-awaited sequel Robocraft 2 (https://www.robocraft2.com/). Robocraft 2 is developed using cutting-edge technologies, including Unity DOTS and Havok Physics.

This is a full-time, permanent, in-studio role based in Portsmouth, UK. Applicants should be eligible to work in the UK.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of the art style across the whole product from in-game content to promotional and marketing material to ensure a cohesive and attractive art style
  • Identify the team requirements of the art team, interview, hire, mentor and onboard new and junior artists
  • Ensure the art team is properly trained, resourced and has the equipment they need to be productive
  • Develop and document art processes, techniques, and workflows including communicating and managing the team to adhere to their principles
  • Organise, schedule and manage the art team to meet agreed deadlines
  • Effectively profile and optimise art content to ensure it is framerate efficient
  • Stay up to date with new art tools, techniques and development practices

Requirements

  • At least one published title / AAA games experience
  • Experience of managing and leading a distributed team of artists
  • Proven experience with hard-surface modelling and texturing to AAA standards
  • Experience with environment art, landscape, foliage, and prop asset creation
  • Experience with Unity HDRP lighting, atmospherics, post-processes, PBR materials
  • An understanding of building shaders with node graphs such as Unity Shader Graph
  • The software we use are Maya, Photoshop, Substance, Illustrator, XD, Speedtree, ZBrush - any other tools that can help you produce higher quality art or be more productive are always welcome
  • A keen eye for detail
  • Excellent organisation and project planning skills, with a respect for deadlines
  • Pro-active team player, able to prioritize tasks and manage your time effectively
  • You must be friendly, have no ego, open to other opinions, and also confident in your own ability and skills. How you integrate as a person within the team will be critical to your success within the role.
  • Stay up to date on best practices to keep up up with industry standards
  • A genuine interest and passion for creating and playing games.
  • Mentoring, interviewing and scaling teams effectively
