Obsidian Entertainment seeks a Character Art Intern for its Obsidian University Internship Program. The intern will assist the character art team in developing art for their next role-playing game, working closely with experienced artists. Responsibilities include sculpting, modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, material creation, and participating in problem-solving discussions. The ideal candidate is proficient in Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, and Photoshop, possesses strong anatomical knowledge, and demonstrates a strong portfolio showcasing high-quality 3D art. The internship provides an opportunity to contribute to a major game title while learning from industry professionals.
Must have:
  • Proficiency in Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, Photoshop
  • High/low poly modeling, texturing, PBR pipeline skills
  • Human/animal anatomy knowledge, color theory, lighting techniques
  • Sculpting, modeling, UV, texturing, material creation
Good to have:
  • Unreal Engine understanding
  • Lighting principles understanding
  • Optimization principles understanding
  • Hard surface modeling
  • Real-time shader examples
  • Advanced material/rendering samples
  • 2D/3D conceptual examples

We are looking for a Character Art Intern to join us for our Obsidian University Internship Program. Come help us make our next world-class roleplaying game!

Work with Character Artists to develop art for our next big game. Spend the summer assisting the character art team with modeling. Work side-by-side with our world-class developers, learn what it takes to create fantastic characters, and contribute to the next great Obsidian Entertainment title.

Responsibilities

  • Sculpt, model, UV, texture, and create materials

  • Work closely with art leads to ensure the visual targets are met and stylistically consistent

  • Participate in technical and aesthetic problem-solving discussions for the entire project

  • Build and maintain an effective character asset pipelines to produce content for an RPG  

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Maya, Z-Brush, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, and Photoshop

  • Proficient with high and low poly modeling skills

  • Proficient with texture and shader creation within a PBR pipeline

  • Proficient in knowledge of human anatomy, clothing, tools as well as animal anatomy

  • Solid grasp of color theory and lighting techniques for quality presentation as well as the best player experience

Pluses

  • Understanding of Unreal Engine

  • Understanding of lighting principles

  • Understanding of optimization principles

Portfolio Requirements

  • A web portfolio that demonstrates a range of high-quality, 3D art

  • Examples of modeled, textured, and lit characters

Portfolio Pluses

  • Hard surface modeling examples

  • Real-time shader examples

  • Advanced material and rendering samples

  • Quality 2D or 3D conceptual examples
