Summary

This temporary, project-based Agronomy Research Associate position at the Walt Disney Resort focuses on enhancing the 90-acre browse farm that supplies foliage to the resort's animals. Responsibilities include researching and implementing horticultural/agronomic techniques to boost farm productivity, diversity, and sustainability; collaborating with farm and nutrition teams; collecting and analyzing field data on plant, soil, and biomass; assessing browse palatability; and communicating research findings to various audiences. The role involves master planning for farm expansions and knowledge dissemination through publications and presentations. This is a two-year project hire with no guarantee of permanent placement.
Must have:
  • 3+ years agronomy/horticulture experience
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Proficient in data analysis (Excel)
  • Field experience in Southeastern US preferred
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Research & implementation of techniques
Good to have:
  • Experience with non-traditional forage crops
  • Agroforestry or vineyard experience
  • Master's degree in agronomy or horticulture

Job Summary:

About the Role & Team

The Walt Disney Resort maintains a unique 90-acre tree farm (browse farm) that provides valuable foliage to feed the leaf-eating animals at Disney's Animal Kingdom and Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge.

In this temporary project-based role, you will work with our nutrition and farm partners to coordinate and evaluate methods to increase the productivity, diversity, and sustainability of the browse farm.

This is an estimated two-year Project Hire position without any guarantee of permanent placement. In this role, you will report to the Animal Nutrition Operations Manager.

What You Will Do

  • Research horticultural/agronomic techniques
  • Meet regularly with farm and nutrition management
  • Sample plants and soil in the field
  • Enter and analyze data from field tests
  • Measure biomass production
  • Collect data on palatability of the browse varieties to different animal species
  • Communicate results to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences
  • Help with master planning of the farm and future farm expansions
  • Collaborate with partners to disseminate the results of research through appropriate journals, articles, and scientific presentations and share knowledge with Resort guests and visitors

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in agronomy, horticulture or related field, ideally with field experience in the southeastern United States
  • Ability to balance the needs of multiple projects and partnerships
  • Strong organizational, problem solving, and time management skills
  • Proficient using Excel to efficiently manage data
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with non-traditional forage crops, agroforestry, or vineyards

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in agronomy or horticulture or related field

Preferred Education

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in agronomy or horticulture or related field
