Job Description

Senior Hardware Engineer at Microsoft's SCHIE team, responsible for designing custom hardware for Azure. The role involves leading VR design of AI hardware, defining hardware power requirements, schematic entry in Cadence tools, PCB layout review, BOM creation, test plan development, hardware bring-up and debugging. Collaboration with internal and external partners, including ODMs/OEMs, is crucial to ensure high quality and reliability for cloud environments. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in multiphase buck & PDN design, VR validation planning, and power modeling. Experience with high-volume hardware production and cost analysis is preferred.

Overview

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions.

We are looking for a Senior Hardware Engineer to join the team.

 

Our team collaborates across different organizations in Azure to build in-house custom hardware. We immensely value culture, mentorship, and acting as a unified team.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

 

  • 7+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of Multiphase buck & PDN design experience for high current low voltage DCDC conversion 
  • 5+ years experience developing VR validation plans 
  • 5+ years power modeling experience 
  • 5+ years of collaboration with silicon & packaging power team to define power specs 

 

 

Other Requirements:

 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.  

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

 

  • 5+ years’ experience with Cadence EDA tools 
  • 5+ years’ experience developing HW component and system level specifications 
  • Experience with high volume hardware production. 
  • Experience with cost/time/risk tradeoff analysis relative to time to market. 
  • Experience with bleeding edge hardware design. 
  • Experience working with ODM

Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.    Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation. Responsibilities

  • Lead VR design of awesome AI hardware. 
  • Work with internal and external partners to define and specify HW power requirements. 
  • Perform & review Schematic Entry in Cadence tools. 
  • Be able to review and guide PCB Layout for high-speed, and high and low power designs. 
  • Support BOM Creation & Manufacturing requirements. 
  • Create bring-up, test and validation plans to ensure robust hardware. 
  • Execute bring-up tests and debug hardware reports. 
  • Collaborate with partners to ensure systems meet significant quality, reliability, and service level requirements for a cloud environment.
