The System Engineer, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) role at Google involves designing, coding, and executing projects to enhance the reliability of critical enterprise applications. This includes reducing operational workload on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and the Google stack, leveraging SRE strategies across platforms, and collaborating with business partners to innovate reliability solutions. Responsibilities encompass driving impactful projects to completion, fostering communication across teams (India, US, and business partners), supporting Corp Engineering services, and ensuring Google's infrastructure remains reliable, scalable, and secure. On-call rotation is part of the role. The ideal candidate possesses strong software development, system administration, and troubleshooting skills, with experience in large-scale systems and Google Cloud environments.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in CS or related field
  • 2+ years experience with data structures/algorithms
  • Experience with Unix/Linux and software development
  • Experience with debugging/troubleshooting
  • Improve reliability of critical enterprise applications
  • Reduce operational work on GCP and Google Stack
Good to have:
  • Experience with large-scale enterprise systems
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Ability to debug, optimize code, and automate tasks

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or in a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with data structures/algorithms and software development in one or more programming languages.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux operating systems internals and administration or networking and Debugging/Troubleshooting.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale complex enterprise system.
  • Experience in navigating enterprise software, deployment and management of workloads on Google Stack or Cloud.
  • Ability to debug, optimize code, and to automate routine tasks.

Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) combines software and systems engineering to build and run large-scale, massively distributed, fault-tolerant systems. SRE ensures that Google's services—both our internally critical and our externally-visible systems—have reliability, uptime appropriate to users' needs and a fast rate of improvement. Additionally SRE’s will keep an ever-watchful eye on our systems capacity and performance. Much of our software development focuses on optimizing existing systems, building infrastructure and eliminating work through automation.

On the SRE team, you’ll have the opportunity to manage the complex challenges of scale which are unique to Google, while using your expertise in coding, algorithms, complexity analysis and large-scale system design.

Responsibilities

  • Design, code and execute on projects to improve the reliability posture of critical enterprise applications.
  • Reduce the operational work significantly for our footprint on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Google stack and Leverage, Google Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) reliability strategies to span GCP and the Google stack.
  • Drive technical interactions with business partners to come up with innovative ideas in terms of improving reliability for enterprise applications and deliver Impact by helping the team focus and choose impactful projects, and deliver to completion.
  • Foster communication across India, US and business partner teams and collaborate with the US SRE team to support Corp Engineering services.
  • Work with other engineering teams to ensure that Google's infrastructure is reliable, scalable, and secure and participate in the team's on-call rotation.
