Summary

The Product & Data Engineering team develops Disney's consumer-facing products (Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, etc.). As a Sr. Software Engineer, you'll build and support data pipelines for live processing of core systems, APIs powering various brands, and tools for core platforms. Responsibilities include designing multi-layered systems for high-throughput experiences, operating cloud-based services, collaborating on troubleshooting, researching new technologies, collaborating with product managers and engineers, designing data models, building scalable backend services, and providing guidance on development practices. You'll work on content distribution, management systems, and taxonomies supporting National Geographic, Marvel, and more.

The Product & Data Engineering team is responsible for end to end development for Disney’s world-class consumer-facing products, including streaming platforms Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, and digital products & experiences across ESPN, Marvel, Disney Studios, NatGeo, and ABC News. The team drives innovation at scale for millions of consumers around the world across Apple, Android, Smart TVs, game consoles, and the web, with our platforms powering core experiences like personalization, search, messaging and data.

As a member of the Entertainment Platform team, you will build and support the data pipelines behind the live processing of our core systems, build and support APIs that power the products across our brands and build and support the tools and systems around our Core Platforms. As a platform engineer you will be responsible for extensible solutions, at scale, and advancing our platform onto modern frameworks and technologies. You will interact with numerous teams to define scalable workflows in and out of the pipeline, providing a strong foundation for many products. Examples include content distribution, content management systems, and taxonomies supporting products for National Geographic, Marvel and more...

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the design and implementation of multi-layered systems delivering high throughput consumer facing experiences
  • Efficiently operate mission-critical cloud-based services, with an emphasis in reliability, security, and performance
  • Collaborate & troubleshoot with the rest of the team in the analysis and resolution of hard engineering problems involving high trafficked web application services and API’s. Oversee service performance, scalability, and event planning requirements
  • Research, learn, and evangelize widespread adoption of new technologies and architecture patterns. Influence and contribute to department technical strategy and planning.
  • Collaborate with product managers and fellow engineers in the design and implementation of systems delivering high throughput experiences
  • Design data models and build scalable backend services that interact with frontend clients and applications
  • Provide guidance and enforcement of development practices and processes. Review code and work with junior engineers to ensure product and design specifications are met

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience  
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing high volume, cached, fault tolerant, multi-threaded scalable systems
  • Proven Experience with Java and open-source technologies like Spring, Tomcat, MySQL, MongoDB, Kafka, Elastic Search, etc.
  • Experience with cloud-based technologies such as AWS EC2, ECS, SQS, S3, Lambda, CloudFormation, etc.
  • Exposure to full lifecycle of application development, including best practices of unit testing, code reviews, documentation, etc.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to learn and adapt to new technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on a diverse scope of software and database projects requiring detailed analysis, creative/practical problem solving. Strong analytical skills as well as solid capabilities for debugging and troubleshooting.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail

The hiring range for this position in Glendale, CA and Bristol, CT is $138,900 to $186,200 per year and in New York, NY and Seattle, WA is $145,400 to $195,000 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
