This Software Engineer II role within Microsoft's Mobile Engineering Systems team focuses on enhancing the efficiency and scalability of the mobile release process for Microsoft Teams. Responsibilities include identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks in Android apps, building and maintaining performance testing tools, automating regression testing, collaborating with developers on code optimization, and building tools to improve quality issue detection. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Android development using Kotlin and Java, performance testing, and telemetry/analytics tools. The role involves optimizing app code for speed and responsiveness, improving CI/CD pipelines, and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement.

We are looking for a Sofware Engineer II to join our Mobile Engineering Systems team. This role is integral to enhancing the efficiency and scalability of our Mobile release process. Our infrastructure allows feature teams to deliver new features to millions of users in an automated fashion. By automating repetitive tasks, you will play a key role in improving operational efficiency, reducing response times, and enabling the feature team developers to be more efficient.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Solid proficiency in Android development using Kotlin and Java. 
  • Proficiency in performance testing, stress testing, and benchmarking for Android applications. 
  • Experience with telemetry and analytics tools to measure app performance (e.g., Firebase Performance Monitoring, custom telemetry frameworks). 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent problem-solving & debugging skills. 
  • 4+ years of coding experience in an object-oriented programming language, with knowledge of Java, Kotlin.
  • Deep understanding of the Android platform, including app lifecycle, memory management, threading, and performance optimization techniques. 
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated performance regression testing. 
  • Familiarity with machine learning or AI techniques in mobile app performance optimization. 
  • Experience in iOS development.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in CPU, GPU, memory, battery, and network usage using tools like Android Studio Profiler and Perfetto. 
  • Build and maintain performance testing tools and automate regression testing to detect issues early. 
  • Collaborate with developers to optimize app code for speed, responsiveness, and efficiency. 
  • Build tools/bots to improve detection of quality issues, contribute ideas to continuously improve our systems, and drive actionable code and product quality feedback.
