Microsoft's Purview team seeks a Principal Software Engineer to lead the vision and strategy for streamlining deployment and optimizing operations of Microsoft Purview solutions across specialized clouds. This role demands expertise in designing, implementing, and delivering critical subsystems within a high-scale security data platform. The successful candidate will collaborate with various teams, drive technical strategy, mentor engineers, ensure adherence to best practices, and optimize subsystem performance for scalability, availability, and security. Responsibilities include leading end-to-end feature development, collaborating with product management and security experts, and driving continuous improvement through technology adoption. A strong focus on compliance with stringent security and regulatory controls is essential.
Must have:
  • Active TS/SCI clearance (willing to upgrade)
  • 6+ years experience in software engineering (C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python)

We are seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join our Microsoft Purview team.


Microsoft Purview solutions offer integrated coverage to address data fragmentation across organizations, improve visibility for data protection and governance, and address the merging of traditional IT management roles. Our team ensures the consistent and efficient delivery of Microsoft Purview solutions across all specialized environments, including Government and Sovereign clouds, while complying with relevant standards and regulations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience

Other Requirements:

Security Clearance Requirements: Candidates must be able to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:  

  • Candidates must have an active TS/SCI  and be willing to upgrade to TS/SCI (with polygraph). This role will require candidates to maintain the TS/SCI (with polygraph) clearance. Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. Failure to maintain or obtain the appropriate clearance and/or customer screening requirements may result in employment action up to and including termination.
  • Clearance Verification: This position requires successful verification of the stated security clearance to meet federal government customer requirements. You will be asked to provide clearance verification information prior to an offer of employment.
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Citizenship & Citizenship Verification: This position requires verification of U.S citizenship due to citizenship-based legal restrictions. Specifically, this position supports United States federal, state, and/or local United States government agency customers and is subject to certain citizenship-based restrictions where required or permitted by applicable law. To meet this legal requirement, citizenship will be verified via a valid passport, or other approved documents, or verified US government clearance.

 

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

 

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead the vision and strategy to streamline deployment and optimize the operations of Microsoft Purview solutions across specialized clouds, ensuring compliance with stringent security and regulatory controls. You will drive the technical strategy for your area, working with multiple partner teams across product management, security experts, and engineering to align requirements, build consensus, and ensure seamless delivery of complex features. You will mentor engineers, lead technical discussions, and ensure best practices are followed, while ensuring the subsystem meets scalability, security, and performance requirements. Key Responsibilities:

 

• Own and lead the design, implementation, and delivery of a critical subsystem within a high-scale, exabyte-scale security data platform.

• Drive consensus across multiple partner teams, ensuring alignment on technical decisions and project goals.

• Collaborate closely with product management, security experts, data scientists, and other engineering teams to translate business needs into technical solutions.

• Lead end-to-end development of features, including requirements gathering, design, implementation, testing, and deployment.

• Mentor and guide senior and engineers, driving technical excellence and ensuring best practices across the team.

• Optimize subsystem performance to handle vast amounts of security data, ensuring scalability, availability, and security.

• Drive continuous improvement by adopting new technologies and methodologies to enhance the platform's capabilities.
