Internship - SPAD Photo Detection Analysis
NXP is collaborating with startups on ion-trap quantum computing. State readout is an essential ingredient for every quantum computer. In ion-traps state readout is typically performed via state-dependent fluorescence measured using a microscope. This approach is not easily scalable since the objective of the microscope is relatively big compared to the ion-trap chips. In this internship, you will help miniaturize ion-trap quantum computers by replacing this microscope with a SPAD sensor.
Single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) are diodes reversed biased beyond their breakdown voltage. At this operating point the internal electric field is sufficiently large that a single (photon-generated) charge carrier can trigger an avalanche which results in a detectable output signal. For ion readout the SPAD needs to operate at 4 kelvin and be sensitive for ultraviolet photons. In this internship, you will take up the challenge of optimizing the SPAD for this use case.
The internship’s focus is hands-on lab work characterizing the UV sensitivity of SPAD variants at 4 kelvin. The experimental setup combines a cryostat that cools down to 4 kelvin with a calibrated light source to illuminate the SPADs, and electronics to measure the output signals. In your daily work, you will operate this setup and execute tasks such as programming measurement routines and analyzing measurements results. Besides your project work, you will get an excellent opportunity to experience the world of Front End Innovation at NXP.
