The Data Engineer II role at Microsoft's AI, Insights and Modeling (AIIM) team focuses on building highly scalable data platforms for Microsoft Teams Phone Systems. Responsibilities include designing and developing distributed systems on cloud platforms, leveraging ML models, supporting business intelligence, and ensuring data governance. This role requires building world-class software engineering components, championing data-driven decisions, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate will have experience with large datasets, SQL/Data Bricks/PySparkSQL/Azure Data Factory, and business intelligence tools like Power BI. The position is hybrid, requiring 3 days a week on-site in Redmond, WA.
Must have:
  • 2+ years building high-scale BI and data engineering solutions
  • 1+ year experience designing distributed systems on cloud platforms

Overview

Our team provides telephony and associated experiences to Teams, Skype and third-party adoptions. Our team is called AI, Insights and Modeling (AIIM) that provides business intelligence, data and AI/ML (machine learning) services to the Phone Systems business.


We are looking for a Data Engineer II to lead a critical set of functions that build highly scalable data platforms and deliver services and experiences for empowering Microsoft’s Teams Phone Systems Business to be successful. This is a unique opportunity to use your software skills and experience in providing data towards building core technologies that will directly affect the future of Microsoft Phone system business. In this position, you will be part of a fun-loving, inclusive team that seeks challenges, loves learning and values teamwork. You will collaborate with team members and partners to build high-quality and innovative data platforms with full stack data solutions using latest technologies in a dynamic and agile environment and have opportunities to anticipate future technical needs of the team and contribute in technical space to keep raising the bar for our competition. You will be responsible for supporting Business Intelligence for the entire business while expanding the provisioning of data as a currency for the business lifeline. Reviews internal and external business and product requirements for data operations and activity and suggests changes and upgrades to systems and storage to accommodate ongoing needs. Maintains customer privacy by enforcing data governance structures, defining data accessibility, using data in compliance with applicable laws and policies, and defining and documenting data classification and lineage.

 

This role requires you to be onsite 3 days a week in Microsoft's offices in Redmond, WA. By applying to this U.S. Redmond, WA position, you are required to be local to the Seattle area and relocation does not apply/is not provided for the role.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years experience in business analytics, data science, data modeling or data engineering work
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science, Math, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ years experience in business analytics, data science, data modeling or data engineering work
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience of building high scale enterprise Business Intelligence and data engineering solutions.
  • 1+ years of experience in designing and developing distributed systems on cloud platform.
  • Experience using ML, anomaly detection, predictive analysis, and/or exploratory data analysis.

Other Requirements

 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using a variety of data stores.
  • Experience working with large data sets in SQL/Data Bricks/PySparkSQL/Azure Data Factory or similar.
  • Experience in Business Intelligence or visualization with tools such as Power BI.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and operate in cross-functional global organization.
Data Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.
