As an SDE, you'll leverage your engineering skills to automate routine tasks and reduce toil. We don't just write code to fix bugs; we focus on developing tools and solutions that address entire classes of problems. We prioritize observability, instrumenting our systems to turn data into actionable insights. We understand that the efficiency of our systems impacts not only the bottom line but also the environment. At Google, we value collaboration, community, and the opportunity to learn and grow. This role involves troubleshooting and resolving Infrastructure issues, interacting with customers and internal development teams, translating technical details into clear and concise language, and participating in training and activations. You'll also be part of a 24x7 on-call rotation to support escalations.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent
  • 5 years of experience with systems automation

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with systems automation, and with systems design and implementation in production distributed environments.

  • Experience in one of the areas of infrastructure (e.g., Linux, Kubernetes, Networking, Storage, etc.).
  • Due to the sensitive nature of this role, candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a Level 2 security clearance (SÜ2) under the German Classification Act (SÜG).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in technical writing or a related field with various authoring and content management tools.
  • Experience in scripting languages such as Bash, Perl, Python, and Ruby to automate routine tasks.
  • Experience in SRE or IT production systems engineering, with knowledge of physical server, storage, and network devices.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills and the ability to empathize with customers and understand their needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

About the job

Systems Development Engineering (SDE) at Google is a role where you manage services and systems at scale. SDEs creatively put their engineering discipline to use automating the mundane and reducing toil. We don’t just write code to fix bugs, but emphasize the development of tools and solutions that fix classes of problems. We know it’s hard to control what you can’t measure – so we focus on observability: instrumenting first, then turning data into knowledge, and finally knowledge into action. We know that the operational efficiency of Google systems, services, virtual compute environments and the operating systems that power them impact the environment, not just the bottom line. We know that working together we can do more, and that community matters.

Google brings together people with a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. We encourage them to collaborate, think big and take risks in a blame-free environment. We promote self-direction to work on meaningful projects, while we also strive to create an environment that provides the support and mentorship needed to learn and grow.

Together we engineer and build the infrastructure, tools, access and telemetry for systems that enable orchestration of Google-scale services. Come build things that matter.

Google Cloud accelerates every organization’s ability to digitally transform its business and industry. We deliver enterprise-grade solutions that leverage Google’s cutting-edge technology, and tools that help developers build more sustainably. Customers in more than 200 countries and territories turn to Google Cloud as their trusted partner to enable growth and solve their most critical business problems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform day-to-day troubleshooting and resolution of Infrastructure issues (e.g., Network, Storage, Servers,OS, Kubernetes, etc.).
  • Interact with customers as well as internal development organizations in order to accomplish shared goals.
  • Work with technical writers and Google partners to translate technical details into clear, concise language that anyone can grasp and ensure consistent use of terms and language across all documentation.
  • Participate in Customer, Partner, and Internal team activations and training as needed, and travel internationally up to 25% of the time as needed.
  • Participate in the 24x7 on-call rotation to support escalations from client inquiries as well as internal reference inquiries.
