Google Compute Engine's Telemetry Insights team seeks a Staff Software Engineer to build and own the technical roadmap for GCE fleet observability and reliability using data-driven analysis. The role requires expertise in AI/ML, driving innovation to meet scaling demands and customer needs. Collaboration with internal teams (SREs, product managers) is crucial, involving defining key metrics, implementing processes, and maintaining SLOs. Responsibilities include establishing data best practices, mentoring team members, and leveraging data to proactively identify opportunities and mitigate risks for GPUs. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in software development, testing, design, architecture, and ML infrastructure optimization (model deployment, evaluation, data processing).
Must have:
  • 8+ years software development experience
  • 5+ years testing & launching software
  • 5+ years experience with ML design & optimization
  • Expertise in AI/ML and data-driven analysis
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills
Good to have:
  • Master's or PhD in related field
  • Technical leadership experience
  • Experience in complex, matrixed organizations
  • Data management expertise (quality, governance, modeling)
  • Experience with GPUs and driving infrastructure reliability

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products, and 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
  • 5 years of experience with one or more of the following: Speech/audio (e.g., technology duplicating and responding to the human voice), reinforcement learning (e.g., sequential decision making), ML infrastructure, or specialization in another ML field.
  • 5 years of experience leading ML design and optimizing ML infrastructure (e.g., model deployment, model evaluation, data processing, debugging, fine tuning).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional, and/or cross-business projects.
  • Experience using data to proactively identify opportunities, mitigate risks, and take on the highest quality and reliability for GPUs.
  • Experience in data management - data quality and data governance, Data architecture and Data modeling.
  • Experience in driving reliability of large scale infrastructure using data driven insights and Machine learning.

GCE Telemetry team plays a critical role in providing customers, the information and tools necessary to understand and improve the overall observability of the compute instances. GCE Telemetry services team collects and stores large scale and real time VM Telemetry data from the entire GCE fleet.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $189,000-$284,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Own and build technical roadmap of GCE fleet observability and reliability based on data driven analysis.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in AI/ML, driving innovation in GCE observability to meet the demands of our growing scale and customer base.
  • Partner effectively with internal customers, SREs, product managers, and project managers to align priorities and manage staffing needs.
  • Define key business metrics and SLOs, and implement robust processes and tools to maintain them. Establish and promote data best practices throughout GCE.
  • Coach, mentor, and support team members at all levels in their career development.
