Job Description

As a Software Engineering Manager at Google, you'll lead a team of engineers working on Google Compute Engine (GCE), a key component of Google Cloud Platform. You'll be responsible for setting priorities, building partnerships, identifying and resolving technical issues, and contributing to product strategy. The Managed Infrastructure and Automation (MIAU) team focuses on providing reliable, cost-effective, and user-friendly virtual machine management solutions. You'll be involved in building and maintaining backend components for provisioning and orchestrating virtual machines, including Google Batch, a system for executing batch jobs efficiently and at scale. This role requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to manage large-scale projects internationally.

Must have:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
8 years of experience with software development
3 years of experience in a technical leadership role
2 years of experience in people management

Good to have:

Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science
Experience working in a complex, matrixed organization

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).
3 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing projects, with 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.

Preferred qualifications:

Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, or a related technical field.
Experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.

The Managed Infrastructure and Automation (MIAU) team is part of Control Plane within Google Compute Engine (GCE), it empowers customers and internal Google Cloud Platfomr (GCP) services through seamlessly reliable, surprisingly cost-effective, and delightfully easy-to-use virtual machine management solutions. The team builds and maintains backend components for provisioning and orchestrating virtual machines. Google Batch is a system designed to provision, schedule, queue, and execute batch jobs on managed Google Cloud resources. Its long-term goal is to serve as the foundational building block for executing batch jobs in an almost serverless manner, while achieving resource efficiency, high throughput, and scalability.

Responsibilities

Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals. Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
Build cross-functional partnerships, and work closely with developers and product managers to identify productivity, production quality and coverage issues, and provide insight on improving both through scale and tooling.
Set direction and priorities for the product area, in cooperation with the team.
Build, grow and retain top talent, and continually find ways to inspire and challenge the engineering organization.
Work with team members on their career and general performance.
