Microsoft's Bing team is seeking a Gen AI Principal Applied Scientist to design and develop LLMs and subsystems for search-specific scenarios. This role requires expertise in working with research and search teams, aligning with stakeholders, building models, and creating custom LLMs and architecture. Responsibilities include acting as a leading expert, championing innovative technologies, incorporating business requirements, advising teams, mentoring, establishing best practices, building relationships with stakeholders, driving efforts to attract talent, and leading discussions on ethics and privacy. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in AI and a strong understanding of large language models and their application to search.

Overview

As Microsoft continues to push the boundaries of AI (Artificial Intelligence), we are looking for committed individuals to work with us on a new strategic Search effort.

Our vision is bold and broad — to bring the power of Copilot’s AI to shape the future of Search in the GenAI era.  

Bing team in Microsoft AI is seeking experienced Principal Applied Scientists in Mountain View, CA or Redmond, WA to help shape and build the next wave of capabilities to Search.  

  

As a Gen AI Principal Applied Scientist you will design and develop LLMs (Large Language Models) and underlying subsystems to tailor to various Search specific scenarios.

We are looking for an individual who has the proven capability of working with Research and Search teams and partnering with them to deliver the best of joint class solutions.  This can range from alignments with senior stakeholders, working together to building models, to coming up, with ways to build custom LLMs and architecture for specific product needs (especially GenAI).

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related experience 
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer or related field AND 6+ years related experience 
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience 
    • OR equivalent experience.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate or Master's Degree Computer Science, or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years related experience.

Applied Sciences IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 - $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 - $314,400 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a leading expert in your field for a broad area of research, applying this knowledge to solve product-related problems. Champion innovative technologies related to industry trends, products, and other advances, and develop and share unique technical knowledge with teams. 
  • Incorporate key business and product requirements to define a clear agenda and drive programs around key business challenges. Advise teams on methods, ensure quality and scientific rigor, and drive business impact. 

  • Proactively provide mentorship and build your team’s capabilities. Establish best practices, serve as technical lead, build trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders and drive efforts to attract, screen and interview top talent. 

  • Drive discussions around ethics and privacy policies related to research and lead decision making efforts. Ensure that members across the discipline are aware of the potential for bias in the solutions being developed.
