Summary

The New York Times seeks an Engineering Manager to lead a team of 5-7 engineers developing and maintaining their digital puzzle game web platform. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you'll work collaboratively across departments to deliver a premium user experience for games like the NYT Crossword and Wordle. Responsibilities include managing a diverse engineering team, fostering collaboration, providing coaching and mentorship, contributing to roadmap development, and advocating for engineering best practices. The ideal candidate possesses 1+ years of engineering management experience or 3+ years in a technical leadership role, along with at least 5 years of web development experience using technologies such as React, Node.js, and semantic HTML/SCSS. A passion for NYT Games and commitment to journalistic independence are highly valued.

About the Role

The New York Times is looking for an Engineering Manager to join the Games team. You will report to the Director of Engineering, Games Platform, to lead a team of engineers focusing on the technologies powering our web platform, while working across departments to deliver and maintain the premier destination for digital puzzle games.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters. You can typically expect to come into the office two days per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a diverse team of 5-7 software engineers, ranging in career level

  • Foster an environment that boosts productivity and collaboration

  • Develop people and teams through coaching, mentoring and feedback and oversee the hiring needs of your team

  • Work with product owners, project managers, and other partners to develop and deliver a compelling roadmap that helps us meet our goals

  • Help establish and advocate for engineering best practices

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Basic Qualifications:

  • 1+ years experience as an Engineering Manager or 3+ years in a technical leadership role

  • 5+ years of full-time software engineering experience working with web technologies such as React, Node.js, and accessible, semantic HTML and SCSS

  • Demonstrated success coaching engineers, helping them make an impact while growing in their careers

  • Experience facilitating continuous improvement and learning

  • Familiarity with managing a backlog of competing opportunities, and aligning with cross-functional partners

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing web engineering teams

  • Experience with backend technologies and building APIs in languages such as Go, Python, or Java
  • Demonstrated familiarity with and passion for the NYT Games product

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$152,000$190,000 USD
