Obsidian Entertainment is seeking a Character Art Intern for its Obsidian University Internship Program. The intern will assist the character art team in developing art for their next role-playing game. Responsibilities include sculpting, modeling, UV mapping, texturing, material creation, and collaborating with art leads to ensure visual consistency. The ideal candidate will be proficient in Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, and Photoshop, possess strong high and low-poly modeling skills, and demonstrate a solid understanding of human and animal anatomy, color theory, and lighting techniques. The internship offers hands-on experience working alongside world-class developers and contributing to a major game title.
Must have:
  • Proficiency in Maya, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, Photoshop
  • High/low poly modeling, texturing, shader creation (PBR)
  • Human/animal anatomy knowledge, color theory, lighting
Good to have:
  • Unreal Engine experience
  • Understanding of lighting and optimization principles
  • Hard surface modeling, real-time shaders, advanced materials

We are looking for a Character Art Intern to join us for our Obsidian University Internship Program. Come help us make our next world-class roleplaying game!

Work with Character Artists to develop art for our next big game. Spend the summer assisting the character art team with modeling. Work side-by-side with our world-class developers, learn what it takes to create fantastic characters, and contribute to the next great Obsidian Entertainment title.

Responsibilities

  • Sculpt, model, UV, texture, and create materials

  • Work closely with art leads to ensure the visual targets are met and stylistically consistent

  • Participate in technical and aesthetic problem-solving discussions for the entire project

  • Build and maintain an effective character asset pipelines to produce content for an RPG  

Requirements

  • Proficiency in Maya, Z-Brush, Substance Painter, Marvelous Designer, and Photoshop

  • Proficient with high and low poly modeling skills

  • Proficient with texture and shader creation within a PBR pipeline

  • Proficient in knowledge of human anatomy, clothing, tools as well as animal anatomy

  • Solid grasp of color theory and lighting techniques for quality presentation as well as the best player experience

Pluses

  • Understanding of Unreal Engine

  • Understanding of lighting principles

  • Understanding of optimization principles

Portfolio Requirements

  • A web portfolio that demonstrates a range of high-quality, 3D art

  • Examples of modeled, textured, and lit characters

Portfolio Pluses

  • Hard surface modeling examples

  • Real-time shader examples

  • Advanced material and rendering samples

  • Quality 2D or 3D conceptual examples
