Job Description

As an Associate Security Counsel at Google, you'll oversee the handling of legal processes and user data requests from government agencies globally. You'll work closely with various Google teams, establishing and enforcing data disclosure policies aligned with Google's principles. Responsibilities include communicating with government agencies, contributing to Google's privacy initiatives, and supporting the public policy, legal, and communications teams. The role demands expertise in data privacy laws, regulations, and incident response, and a strong understanding of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) and its state equivalents. You'll need to manage legal risks proactively, advise on product development, and collaborate effectively across multiple teams. The work is fast-paced, demanding quick turnarounds and creative solutions to complex legal challenges in the information age.

Must have:

JD/LL.B or equivalent
3+ years attorney experience
Data privacy law expertise
ECPA & state equivalent knowledge
Internal investigation experience
Bar admission/authorized to practice law

Good to have:

Prosecutor/public defender experience
Excellent communication & teamwork skills
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Experience with cybersecurity legal issues

Minimum qualifications:

JD, LL.B., equivalent degree, or equivalent practical experience.
3 years of attorney-level experience in government, in-house, or at a law firm.
Experience with any of the following: compliance with data privacy laws, regulations, or incidents, user data disclosure (such as the electronic communications privacy act or state equivalents), cybersecurity legal issues, or conducting internal investigations.
Admitted to the bar and in good standing or otherwise authorized to practice law (e.g., have registered in-house status) in the state in which the position is located.

Preferred qualifications:

Experience as a state or federal prosecutor, or public defender.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with quick turnaround, and to build effective relationships across relevant stakeholders.
Ability to work on a broad range of legal matters.
Excellent communication, people management, public speaking and team skills.
Ability to travel.

As an Associate Security Counsel, you will oversee Google’s response to requests for user data from public safety and similar agencies from around the world as part of Google’s Data Disclosure Strategy team in the legal department. This program provides legal subject matter expertise to ensure that user data is managed in a manner consistent with Google’s principles and policies, and governing legal requirements. The team works closely with the compliance team and others across the Google family, including members of the internal security, engineering, product and policy teams, as well as others within the legal department. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $195,000-$293,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
