The Role

Netflix is seeking a Director to lead Netflix’s policy engagement efforts in Canada. The Public Policy team at Netflix engages with policymakers, regulators, and government bodies in order to advocate for Netflix’s interests in the policymaking process, and acts as a strategic partner to internal business groups as they navigate the policy world.  This role will be a senior leader managing our efforts in Canada to develop reliable and efficient content and production ecosystems as well as heading up our efforts at the state level to promote Netflix and protect our business interests.  

The Director of Canada Public Policy will be a key leader on this team. They will work with internal partners throughout the business to facilitate production processes in our studios, help identify and define the company’s public policy objectives in Canada, and develop and manage relationships with external stakeholders in order to further those objectives. The role will be based in our Toronto offices (with regular travel) and reports to the Vice President of Public Policy, UCAN. 


Responsibilities:

  • Working with business partners to understand all aspects of Netflix’s business and its needs, as well as to advise on  the impact of public policy developments on the business. 

  • Developing strategy for Netflix Canada to advance Netflix’s business interests.

  • Communicating internally in a concise and organized manner that ensures stakeholder alignment within the business.

  • Monitoring and advancing legislative and regulatory initiatives in Canada.

  • Developing relationships with government stakeholders. 

  • Building coalitions with peer companies and third party organizations. 

  • Identifying business developments with global impact to other members of the policy team.

  • Partner with key internal stakeholders to identify production priorities and facilitate production processes.

  • Managing external consultants and relationships with membership organizations.

  • Substantively, the Director will partner with others on the Public Policy team to lead Netflix’s approach in the following areas: cultural regulations, internet policy, privacy and data security, competition policy, intellectual property, commerce and payments, taxation, economic incentives, climate & sustainability, and entertainment and content production.

Requirements:

  • At least 15 years of legal, public policy, and advocacy experience.

  • Prior experience navigating regulatory and legislative bodies. 

  • Experience working in government, studios and content production, the private sector, a trade association, a law firm, or a policy organization. 

  • Graduate training in a related discipline and/or a legal degree is also desirable.

  • French language skills are a plus. 

Our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $280,000-960,000 USD.

We also offer paid leave of absence programs.  Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off to be used for vacation, holidays, and sick paid time off.
