Job Description

As a Senior Software Engineer on the XBorg team at Google Cloud, you'll play a pivotal role in developing and maintaining the next generation of orchestration technology for Machine Learning (ML) workloads. XBorg is a cutting-edge system responsible for scheduling high-throughput workloads across Google's vast infrastructure, optimizing resource utilization for ML training and inference. Your responsibilities will include writing and testing code, participating in design reviews, collaborating with peers and stakeholders, reviewing code, contributing to documentation, triaging and resolving issues, and staying abreast of emerging technologies. You'll be part of a team pushing the boundaries of what's possible in ML infrastructure, contributing to the success of Google's products and services.
Must have:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 5 years of software development experience
  • Experience with data structures/algorithms
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products
  • 1 year of experience with software design and architecture
Good to have:
  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field
  • Experience developing accessible technologies
  • Experience in a technical leadership role
  • Experience with machine learning infrastructure
  • Experience with C++

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • Experience developing accessible technologies.
  • Experience in a technical leadership role.
  • Experience with machine learning infrastructure.
  • Experience with C++.

XBorg is part of Borg Control Plane and is a novel orchestration layer responsible for scheduling of throughput oriented workloads onto clusters across the fleet, with a central focus on Machine Learning (ML) training and inference workloads. Xborg's innovative features and introduction of new concepts, such as weighted fair queuing and seamless opportunistic access to unused resource, spatial and platform flexibility, etc, have led to increased resource occupancy and efficiency for ML workloads across major Alphabet products.

Responsibilities

  • Write and test product or system development code.
  • Participate in, or lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders to decide amongst available technologies.
  • Review code developed by other developers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g.,style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
  • Contribute to existing documentation or educational content and adapt content based on product/program updates and user feedback.
  • Triage product or system issues and debug/track/resolve by analyzing the sources of issues and the impact on hardware, network, or service operations and quality.
