The Principal Software Engineer (Infra) at Microsoft's AI Frameworks team will optimize and scale daily workflows reliant on engineering systems (build, CI/CD, test, security, and process). This role requires hands-on software design and development in C/C++, Python, and other languages. Responsibilities include applying engineering principles for robust architectures, collaborating across disciplines, establishing coding standards, identifying requirements, scoping solutions, and estimating work. The ideal candidate has a strong software engineering foundation, experience with CI/CD and build systems, and a passion for solving complex technical problems within a full end-to-end AI stack. Success is measured by developer productivity while meeting security and test requirements.

Overview

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Frameworks team at Microsoft develops the AI software used to train and deploy the world’s most advanced AI models. We collaborate with our hardware teams and partners to build the software stacks for Microsoft’s next-generation supercomputers and the new Maia-100 AI accelerator.  We work closely with ML researchers and developers to optimize and scale out model training and inference.  

The team operates at the intersection of AI algorithmic innovation, purpose-built AI hardware, systems, and software. We are a cross-discipline team of highly capable and motivated people with a collaborative and inclusive culture.  We collaborate with and contribute to the open-source community.

 

As a Principal Software Engineer on this team, you will partner with engineers across AI Frameworks to understand and optimize and scale day to day workflows that are reliant on engineering systems (build, CI/CD, test, security, and process). Our success is measured in developer productivity across the organization while meeting rigorous security and test requirements.

 

This is a technical role: it requires hands on software design and development skills. We’re looking for someone who has a demonstrated history of solving complex technical problems and is motivated to tackle the hardest problems in building a full end-to-end AI stack.  An entrepreneurial approach and ability to take initiative and move fast are essential.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

          o OR equivalent experience.

  • 3+ years’ experience with any of the following: CMake, CI/CD, Azure DevOps, Azure, Cloud Security.

 

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

 

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • A technical background and solid foundation in software engineering principles and architecture design 
  • An intellectual curiosity and passion about learning new technologies 
  • Previous cross-team collaboration skills and the desire to collaborate in a team of researchers and developers 
  • 2+ years’ experience with CI/CD systems 
  • 2+ years’ experience with build systems 
  • 2+ years’ experience with Linux development 
  • Exposure to cloud security and Azure

 

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $135,800 - CAD $253,000 per year.
