The Azure Key Vault team at Microsoft Security seeks a Principal Software Engineer to build and secure the foundation of the cloud. This role involves leading a team in making product and technology decisions, executing on a fast-paced timeline, and working across Azure to integrate services with partner teams and customers' infrastructure. Responsibilities include developing and executing technical strategies, guiding the team in building user experiences, ensuring technical design quality, collaborating with partners, and mentoring developers. The ideal candidate will have experience building highly resilient, distributed cloud services and applying modern software engineering practices. This is a critical role impacting the security and reliability of services across Microsoft.

The Azure Key Vault team is responsible for key and secrets management for Microsoft products. The service enables Azure customers to encrypt data at rest, provision and auto-rotate TLS certificates, and securely manage credentials for resource access. The service operates at cloud scale with 99.99 availability. The team is under the Identity division in Microsoft’s Security organization and is responsible for ensuring customers trust Microsoft’s cloud platform.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of professional experience leading a team of software engineers as a People Manager or Tech Lead.
  • 3+ years of professional experience building, running and maintaining highly resilient, distributed cloud services.

Other Requirements:

 

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft background and Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python 6+ years of experience building, running and maintaining highly resilient, distributed cloud services.
  • Experience designing and building customer facing features for enterprise scenarios.
  • Experience working across teams and divisions, communicating technical details clearly across organizational boundaries and with a history of building partnerships between groups.
  • Effective communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.
  • Experience in applying microservices, serverless, event-driven, and RESTful architectures and patterns.
  • Effective problem-solving, debugging, and troubleshooting skills, with a data-driven and customer-centric approach. Experience in identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks, reliability issues, and security vulnerabilities using data-driven analysis and troubleshooting tools.
  • Experience in applying modern software engineering practices and tools, such as Agile, Scrum, Kanban, Git, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), Unit/Integration/Automation Testing A growth mindset, with the willingness to learn new technologies and domains.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
