Job Description

Tesla's Materials Engineering team is seeking an intern for a 6-month position in Berlin starting February 2025. The intern will contribute to the development and implementation of new materials and manufacturing processes. Responsibilities include establishing requirements, designing and executing tests using advanced instrumentation, analyzing data, and presenting conclusions. The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of materials science, failure mechanisms, and materials testing methods. The role involves hands-on lab work and collaboration with various engineering teams. This is a full-time internship offering ample opportunities for learning and professional growth within a dynamic and innovative environment.

Must have:

Strong understanding of materials properties
Understanding of material failure mechanisms
Ability to interpret data from materials testing
Strong drive to see product manufacturing

The purpose of the Tesla Materials Engineering organization is the Global Mission to deliver new materials and manufacturing processes that revolutionize Tesla’s products. We select, quantify, standardize, qualify, and design new materials. We work with mechanical design engineers, manufacturing, and process to deliver the right material solution for any metal, ceramic or glass that is used in our products. Products range from stamped sheet metal, castings, extrusions, welds, electrical connections, electromagnetic metals, and many more. We are seeking engineers eager to apply fundamental materials science to atomistic problems up to hands on the manufacturing.

You, as an intern, don't have to make the coffee here, it comes out of the machine (for free) and copiers are as rare as phone booths on the street, what you will find here is a lot of experience, new stuff, and fun. You are here on an equal footing with all employees.

What You’ll Do

Establish requirements for deliverables you own (autonomy is expected and respected)
Design and execute tests in our lab using a variety of high value instrumentation.
Outline, evaluate, and establish conclusions for issue or opportunity presented.
Analyze and effectively present data.
Increase the depth of knowledge of materials properties, processing, and applications.

What You’ll Bring

Strong fundamental understanding of mechanical, thermal, electrical, and physical properties of materials.
Understanding of material failure mechanisms.
Ability to interpret data obtained by various materials testing and characterization methods.
A strong drive to go out and see the product made and follow the material.
