Job Description

Tesla's Cell Manufacturing Engineering team seeks a Manufacturing Development Engineer to improve cell manufacturing equipment and processes for Tesla Energy Batteries. This role involves developing innovative processes and equipment, leading projects from concept to high-volume production, collaborating with internal and external teams, and driving DFM. Responsibilities include setting up proof-of-principle trials, analyzing data, owning workstations/processes, leading design reviews, improving existing equipment, conducting root cause analysis, collaborating with integrators, validating equipment, and providing training to technicians. The ideal candidate possesses strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Must have:
  • BS/MS in relevant Engineering
  • 5+ years' experience (or MS)
  • Experience in production environment
  • Process development expertise
  • DFM knowledge
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience with automated equipment
  • Data analysis and problem-solving
Good to have:
  • Statistical Process Control knowledge
  • Overall Equipment Effectiveness improvement experience
  • SolidWorks or Catia experience

The Cell Manufacturing Engineering team at Tesla is looking for a highly motivated Manufacturing Development Engineer to contribute to the development and improving of cell manufacturing equipment and processes for our cutting-edge Tesla Energy Batteries Cells. The Cell is one of the most complex and challenging components designed and manufactured at Tesla. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Tesla’s world class manufacturing facilities.

In addition to developing working on ramping the line the Manufacturing Engineer works with cross-functional teams to test, validate, and roll-out equipment to production. What You’ll Do
  • Drive development of innovative manufacturing processes and equipment, working in cross functional teams and with internal/external suppliers.
  • Lead development projects from first idea, over proof of principle to implementation into high-volume productions lines.
  • Work w/ internal Cell Design Team to drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
  • Setup proof of principle (POP) trials, design required parts/fixtures, execute experiments and analyze results based on data driven diagnostics and analyzation.
  • Own individual workstations/tools/processes, run/troubleshoot/recover by PLC, HMI or tool management software.
  • Lead design reviews and generate documentation, including machine and process specifications, DFMEA, PFMEA, process flow charts, part drawings.
  • Drive development of existing production equipment and processes by characterizing baseline performance and capability of each system and drive actions to maintain or improve performance as measured by product quality and tool availability.
  • Drive root cause analysis through process and equipment expertise, correlate with upstream/downstream processes.
  • Closely collaborate with external equipment integrators on custom automation equipment development
  • Manage external equipment integrators from equipment development through buyoff
  • Validate and characterize new equipment and fixtures for production implementation
  • Generate machine qualification checklist and manage to install, commission and start-up equipment balancing speed and safety
  • Create manufacturing introduction and deliver training to operations and maintenance technicians to ensure and seamless handover of new equipment
What You’ll Bring
  • Either a BS with 5+ years’ relevant experience or an MS in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Evidence of exceptional ability and a passion for Engineering, mindset according First Principle Thinking for Engineering.
  • Knowledge of Statistical Process Control and its application, preferred.
  • Experience developing and improving Process. Have a demonstrated track record of Overall Equipment Effectiveness improvement activities, preferred.
  • 2 or more years of experience in a production environment and/or proven manufacturing development track record.
  • Experience developing manufacturing processes for new and unique products.
  • Experience developing (semi)-automated manufacturing equipment, fixtures and tooling in 3D (SolidWorks preferred, Catia).
  • or comparable areas.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
