Transmissions Component Design Engineer

Indianapolis, IN

The Component Design Engineer is part of the global Engineering, Technology, and Safety organization.  As the Component Design Engineer, you will create engineering solutions that satisfy functional and physical requirements in accordance with Product System and Sub-System level requirements. Crucially, the engineered solutions must exhibit robustness for manufacturing capability.


As the Component Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the on-time delivery and quality of component design definition artefacts i.e., documents, models, definitions that meet system level and sub-system requirements. You will participate within an IPT described by Product Lifecycle System (PLS) and operate in accordance with applicable Rolls-Royce Management System (RRMS) policies and processes. You will be responsible for sub-system integration of the technical activities for their design solutions and enabling lifecycle profitability through the Supply Chain Design.

As the Design Engineer you will be responsible for the creation of design definitions that meet system requirements and product attributes.  You will create solutions that are robust against variation, taking into account the appropriate form, fit, and function. As the Design Engineer you will exhibit strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and understand cross-discipline engineering concepts which include but are not limited to, manufacturing engineering, cost engineering, and product definition.  In this role, you will apply the latest design methods, tools, and techniques to support the design needs of assigned programs.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide engineering support of service and/or development related hardware issues including Engine Investigations (EI) and Technical Variance (TV) consultation
  • Support the supply chain in procuring hardware from multiple suppliers including concession consultation and execution of Drawing Alteration Requests (DARs)
  • Deliver new component designs and design changes within the Design Technical Approval (DTA) Process, which includes (but is not limited to) creating design concepts, optimizing concepts to a final definition, preparing technical presentations and documents, supporting creation of drawings, delivering hardware for validation, and release of hardware to the field
  • Develop and specify component design requirements in accordance with module, system, and customer interface requirements
  • Address manufacturing, assembly, in-field, and aftermarket issues as they arise
  • Participate in or lead Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) teams

 Basic Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace OR;
  • A Master’s degree or JD/PhD
  • You must be a US Citizen to be considered for this opportunity

Preferred Requirements:

  • Clutch, Gear, Shaft, and Structures and Transmissions design experience
  • Experience with component design methods and practices
  • Familiarity with design processes typically encountered by a Rolls-Royce Design Engineer – Design Technical Approval (DTA), Drawing Approval Process (DAP), Technical Variances (TV), Drawing Approval Request (DAR), Concessions/MRB
  • Familiarity with the design tools and databases typically used by a Rolls-Royce Design Engineers (NX, Teamcenter)
  • Familiarity with Finite Element Analysis tools (ANSYS Workbench preferred) and the Stress and Lifing Review process
  • A good grasp of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and limit stacks
  • Experience working with manufacturing and quality, especially with regards to the assessment of nonconforming hardware
  • Experience with computer programming and design optimization
