The Director of Hardware Engineering will drive innovation, partnerships, and development of cutting-edge cloud server motherboard hardware solutions within Microsoft's Azure platform. This leadership role involves managing and mentoring a team of engineering managers, fostering collaboration with internal and external partners, and implementing process improvements for optimal engineering operations. Responsibilities include technology leadership, technology partnerships, organizational leadership, continuous improvement, and a strong customer focus, ensuring the delivery of industry-leading products. The role requires extensive experience in cloud product engineering, hardware development lifecycles, and leading engineering teams in new product development.
Must have:
  • 10+ years experience leading engineering teams

Overview

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. Our focus is on smart growth, high efficiency, and delivering a trusted experience to customers and partners worldwide and we are looking for engineers to help achieve that mission.  

As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the Hardware, Infrastructure Management, and Fundamentals Engineering (HIFE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for engineers dedicated to customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

 

10+ years of technical engineering experience

o OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years of technical engineering experience

o OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

o OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.

 

  • 5+ years of experience with cloud product engineering development and integration. 
  • 10+ years of experience leading and managing engineering teams in new product development of server, desktop, or high run rate electronic systems. 
  • 10+ years of experience in Cloud Hardware design, Hardware development life cycle, and governance best practices. 
  • 5+ years of design for cost, test, quality, manufacturing (DFx) experience.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

 

Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.  

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

 

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related engineering discipline 
  • Intellectual curiosity and a passion about learning and deploying new technologies 
  • An understanding of Azure technologies (www.azure.com) 
  • Relevant experience with component architecture beyond hardware, including software, and firmware 
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve results, create a high-performing, healthy and scalable organization. 
  • Ability to apply a variety of strategic frameworks to analyze problems and guide solutions. 
  • Experience managing complex partner engagement and leading engineering collaboration. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate with executives and technology leaders inside and outside of Microsoft. 
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills. 

 

Hardware Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.

  • Organizational Leadership – manage, lead, grow, and mentor an outstanding team of engineering managers leading teams responsible for the development of innovative, TCO optimized, Cloud server hardware.   
  • Continuous Improvement – drive process improvements through specifications and engineering development processes to enable a best-in-class engineering organization.  
  • Customer Focus – partner with many Microsoft teams and collaborate to deliver industry leading products.
