About the job

Job Description

Tesla's drive unit development team seeks skilled (power) electronic/electrical engineers to enhance electric vehicle power electronics. The role involves complete ownership of traction inverter hardware, from specification and design through simulation, prototyping, validation, high-volume manufacturing support, and field studies. Responsibilities include characterizing power semiconductors, developing analog/digital circuits, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and improving traction inverter performance (peak power, efficiency, reliability, manufacturability, and cost). The position requires hands-on experience with high-voltage power semiconductors, PCBAs, embedded programming, and relevant lab equipment. A strong understanding of power converter design principles and passive electronic components is crucial.
Must have:
  • BSc/MSc/PhD in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  • High-voltage power semiconductor analysis & testing
  • PCBA design & testing experience
  • Embedded programming proficiency
  • Proficiency with lab equipment and simulation tools
Good to have:
  • Power converter layout understanding
  • Traction inverter fundamentals knowledge
  • High-volume automotive application experience
  • Matlab/Python proficiency
  • Knowledge of automotive safety/reliability requirements
What to Expect
Tesla’s drive unit development team is looking for skilled and motivated (power) electronic/electrical engineers to push the power electronics propelling our vehicles to the next level. The team is presently working to improve the current - and design the next - generation of traction inverters and is looking for engineers (any level) to help drive our designs to the physical limits. It's an exciting work environment with plenty of engineering resources and bright colleagues to collaborate with. As an industry leading company, Tesla offers the opportunity to work on bleeding edge technology in a fast paced, dynamic, and high visibility role.
What You’ll Do
  • Start to finish ownership of traction inverter hardware (PCBA and/or power stage) from specification to design, simulation, prototype, validation, and support high-volume manufacturing and field studies.

  • Characterize and model power semiconductors (static, dynamic, thermal) and traction inverters (peak power, efficiency, faults) performance.

  • Develop and test (integrated) analog/digital circuit/power converter technologies to improve traction inverter (peak power, efficiency, reliability, manufacturability, cost) performance.

  • Collaborate with mechanical, manufacturing, test, and control/firmware engineering teams to successfully design, validate, and manufacture traction inverters.

What You’ll Bring
  • B.Sc./M.Sc./Ph.D. (w/ relevant internship/working experience) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering and evidence of exceptional ability.

  • Relevant hands-on experience with analyzing and testing high voltage power semiconductors (switching waveforms and loss mechanisms).

  • Relevant hands-on experience with design and testing of PCBA (integrated circuits, gate drivers, sensors/signal conditioning, power supplies) and with embedded programming.

  • Proficiency with laboratory equipment (oscilloscopes, power supplies, analyzers) and circuit simulation tools, as well as good understanding of schematics, datasheets, and application notes.

  • Good fundamentals (design trade-offs) of passive electronic components (capacitor, inductors, and transformers).

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Understanding of power converters layout for best commutation, electromagnetic compatibility, and thermal performance.

  • Understanding of traction inverters operation and fundamentals (design trade-offs) of electric motors.

  • Experience with circuit/power converter design for high-volume automotive applications.

  • Working knowledge of Matlab and/or Python.

  • Knowledge in environmental, reliability, and safety requirements for automotive applications.
