Google is seeking an Android Staff Software Engineer to design and build user-friendly Gemini experiences for their Smart Display product line. This role involves the entire process from initial concept to implementation, addressing technical challenges, and guiding the team toward optimal solutions. The engineer will define the technical direction and architecture of Android-based Smart Display solutions. Collaboration with Product Managers, UX Designers, and a distributed engineering team is crucial for shaping product strategy, roadmaps, and seamless integration across platforms. The tech stack includes Android, Flutter, Dart, server-driven UI, and cast receiver. Responsibilities include managing project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables; designing, developing, testing, deploying, maintaining, and enhancing software solutions.
Must have:
  • 8+ years software development experience
  • 5+ years Android app development
  • 5+ years testing and launching software
  • 3+ years software design and architecture
  • Strong data structures/algorithms skills
Good to have:
  • Master's/PhD in Engineering or CS
  • 3+ years technical leadership
  • Experience in complex, matrixed organizations
  • Experience with Flutter, Dart, server-driven UI

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience in software development, and with data structures/algorithms.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products, and 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.
  • 5 years of experience with Android application development.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization involving cross-functional or cross-business projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build innovative, user-friendly Gemini experiences for our Smart Display product line. This includes everything from initial concept to final implementation.
  • Address challenging technical problems, explore potential solutions, and guide the team towards the best approach.
  • Define the technical direction and architecture of our Android-based Smart Display solutions.
  • Work closely with Product Managers, UX Designers, and a Distributed Engineering team to shape product strategy, roadmap, and ensure seamless integration across different platforms (e.g., mobile, wearables, tablets, TV, etc.).
  • Work on a tech stack that includes Android, Flutter, Dart, server-driven UI, cast receiver, and more.
