Tesla's Technical Services Operation & Maintenance Team seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to manage critical production and safety-related systems at the Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg. Responsibilities include leading improvement projects to boost reliability and reduce operational costs, managing utility expansion projects (design to execution), overseeing commissioning activities, troubleshooting system issues, conducting cost analysis, and developing predictive/preventive maintenance strategies. The role involves working with various machinery (e.g., chillers, compressors, HVAC systems) and collaborating with cross-functional teams. Strong mechanical engineering expertise and project management skills are essential.
Must have:
  • 10+ years experience in mechanical systems/industrial processes
  • Manufacturing facility experience (preferably in Germany)
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical engineering principles
  • Hands-on experience with rotary equipment
  • Project management experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • German B1 language proficiency
Good to have:
  • PMP certification

The Role

The Technical Services Operation & Maintenance Team continuously monitors and manages utility systems ensuring that they meet the process specifications for vehicle and Cell production. When there are degradations to these systems that impact safety or production, the team is the first line of defense to make time-critical adjustments. The team is also responsible for continuously designing and implementing strategies/improvements to ensure optimum performance of utility systems, working on energy saving projects and driving reliability initiatives for a continuous OEE improvement.

 

As a senior mechanical engineer, you will have the full ownership of critical Systems (Production and Safety related) and your scope will comprise a wide variety of machinery: centrifugal chillers, large turbo compressors, cooling tower systems, dehumidifiers, boilers, pumping systems, large air handling units, extraction systems, centralized chemical delivery systems are among some of the assets that you will be managing.

What You’ll Do
  • Initiate and manage improvement projects to increase reliability and reduce Opex.
  • Technical lead in expansion and/or temporary utility projects (from design to execution).
  • Lead Commissioning activities in collaboration with EPC Team and ensure proper start of operation.
  • Assist/lead the troubleshooting of system operational issues.
  • Complete monthly system operational cost analysis.
  • Review trends, analyze data, and monitor equipment/systems to identify trends and ensure they are running within specifications.
  • Responsible for monitoring current system data demands and utility capacity concerns.
  • Develop solutions to reduce operational costs and/or o improve operational performance of utility systems.
  • Create & modify standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Train facilities personnel on new systems and correct operations.
  • Apply Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) concepts and root cause failure analysis.
  • Work with EHS Team to ensure/resolve local environmental and safety compliance of systems.
  • Develop and implement predictive and preventive maintenance strategies/programs for systems.
What You’ll Bring
  • 10+ years of experience in field engineer/project engineer roles with a focus on mechanical systems/industrial processes.
  • Previous experience in manufacturing facilities, preferably in Germany.
  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and industrial process systems including chilled/cooling and heating water distribution networks, compressed air networks, rotary equipment (pumps, fans, compressors), HVAC. Hands-on experience on rotary equipment maintenance and diagnosis is a benefit.
  • Project management experience (relevant certificate like PMP is a plus
  • Communication and presentation skills are crucial.
  • German Language B1 is required.
