Job Description

This is a 6-month full-time Materials Engineering Internship in Berlin, starting in February 2025. The intern will contribute to Tesla's mission of revolutionizing products through new materials and manufacturing processes. Responsibilities include establishing requirements for deliverables, designing and executing tests using high-value instrumentation, analyzing data, and presenting conclusions. The intern will gain experience in materials properties, processing, and applications, working closely with various teams. Strong fundamentals in mechanical, thermal, electrical, and physical properties of materials are required, along with an understanding of material failure mechanisms and data interpretation from materials testing methods. The ideal candidate is driven to understand the product manufacturing process.

The purpose of the Tesla Materials Engineering organization is the Global Mission to deliver new materials and manufacturing processes that revolutionize Tesla’s products. We select, quantify, standardize, qualify, and design new materials. We work with mechanical design engineers, manufacturing, and process to deliver the right material solution for any metal, ceramic or glass that is used in our products. Products range from stamped sheet metal, castings, extrusions, welds, electrical connections, electromagnetic metals, and many more. We are seeking engineers eager to apply fundamental materials science to atomistic problems up to hands on the manufacturing.

You, as an intern, don't have to make the coffee here, it comes out of the machine (for free) and copiers are as rare as phone booths on the street, what you will find here is a lot of experience, new stuff, and fun. You are here on an equal footing with all employees.

What You’ll Do

Establish requirements for deliverables you own (autonomy is expected and respected)
Design and execute tests in our lab using a variety of high value instrumentation.
Outline, evaluate, and establish conclusions for issue or opportunity presented.
Analyze and effectively present data.
Increase the depth of knowledge of materials properties, processing, and applications.

What You’ll Bring

Strong fundamental understanding of mechanical, thermal, electrical, and physical properties of materials.
Understanding of material failure mechanisms.
Ability to interpret data obtained by various materials testing and characterization methods.
A strong drive to go out and see the product made and follow the material.
