The Controls Engineer for Paint at Tesla's Gigafactory Berlin will be responsible for troubleshooting and programming robotic applications, conveyor systems, and equipment within the Paint Shop. This role involves collaborating with the maintenance team, implementing process optimizations, developing documentation, designing and commissioning automation equipment, and performing root cause analysis. Responsibilities also include implementing quality control methods, optimizing HMI and SCADA systems, creating equipment safety standards, and programming using various languages like ladder logic and structured text. The engineer will manage the network and IT infrastructure and work shifts and overtime as needed.
Must have:
  • 4+ years PLC programming (Siemens)
  • Paint shop automation experience
  • HMI/SCADA programming (WinCC, Ignition)
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Root cause analysis
  • Project management experience
Good to have:
  • SQL, Java, Python knowledge
  • Robotic programming skills
  • CAD proficiency
  • Experience with various programming styles

The Role

The Controls Engineer for Paint will be responsible for troubleshooting and programming robot applications, conveyor systems, equipment, and process/equipment monitoring systems within our Paint Shop. In addition, will collaborate with the maintenance team to fix and improve equipment failures.

What You’ll Do

· Overall responsibility for all controls related activities in the shop, Leading and assisting production in all controls related topics and issues.

· Support and assist maintenance team in troubleshooting difficult breakdowns and chronic equipment failures.

· Responsible for implementing and managing continuous process optimization including the addition of advanced and conventional technologies to improve quality, productivity and reduce overall waste.

· Develop & maintain proper documentation of all electrical equipment and associated procedures, making updates as required by modifications

· Responsibility for designing, selecting, managing, programming, and commissioning of automation equipment used to improve the existing systems.

· Identify weak areas of the production systems using root cause analysis and first principles thinking and implement effective countermeasures using all available means.

· Implement and maintain quality control methods including poka-yokes, data tracking systems, part recognition and problem reporting.

· Optimization and improvement of HMI, and SCADA systems.

· Creation and improvements of equipment safety standards, and the implementation of those standards into the manufacturing equipment, including periodic checks and qualification inspections.

· Understand and program using several different programming styles, including ladder logic, structured text.

· Managing the network and hardware IT infrastructure

What You’ll Bring

· BSc./MSc. Degree in electrical, mechatronics, automation or equivalent experience.

· 4+ years of professional controls engineering experience in Paint shop automation systems.

· 4+ years of advanced PLC programming knowledge on Siemens PLC in a professional environment.

· Understanding of databases and various program languages is a plus (SQL, Java, Python).

· HMI programming experience – WinCC and Ignition SCADA.

· Robotic programming skills desired.

· Proven project management experience.

· Proficient in CAD working with electrical diagrams and prints.

· Willing to perform shift work (nights) and overtime as required.

· Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

· Fluent in the English and/or German language
